Karachi: On Friday, 19th January, 2018, TECH Pakistan in collaboration with Benazir Bhutto Shaheed University Lyari (BBSUL) have initiated the implementation of “Girl Digital Leader”; a flagship not for profit program powered by TECH Pakistan on high notes. An amazing cohort of driven young ladies of BBSUL have participated at the 1st orientation session of “Girl Digital Leader (GDL)”. The session was graciously supported and made happen by the leaders of the university Head of Department (Commerce) – BBSUL; Mr. Umair Baig and Marketing Lecturer (Commerce Dept.) – BBSUL; Mr. Mudassir Hussein along with the student led society of BBSUL called Marketing Society Network.
The orientation has started with the opening remarks by Vice President – TECH Pakistan; Zeeshan Rehmansaying that, “This is my very first time in Lyari and to be honest, I’m highly amazed and delighted to see such an amazing energy and talent in the heart of Lyari, I’m so much excited to initiate our series of digital literacy training with you people and empower you all to become the Girl Digital Leader”. Following the UN Sustainable Goals #5; GDL program is focused to empower women across Pakistan by enhancing the use of enabling communication technology. The program intends to inculcate digital literacy among the young women of Pakistan and board them for home based earning platform of “Blogspay” a social enterprise initiative of TECH Pakistan.
The Program Manager – GDL; Humaira Anwar has oriented girls with the importance and benefit of the program and procedure to apply. She said, “It feels so heartbreaking to see such low number of girls in tech inclined fields’ specifically social media where their male counterparts have developed their businesses and earning really good. Such low proportion of women on social media made them a particular target of cyber harassment. With “Girl Digital Leader” program we are not only training girls in digital literacy but actually enhancing young women voices in digital spaces.” The participants have learn some great insights about the blogging and share their passion of diversified subject matters which they want to share with the world via blogging. Almost all the participants were aspiring bloggers.
The session was concluded with the closing remarks by Founder – TECH Pakistan; Kanwal Masroor, he encouraged all the young women present at the orientation session to utilized their potential fully even by sitting at their homes. He emphasize that “You women are actual power user of digital platforms who does not only use it for self-promotion but highlight very important social issues like #metoo campaign”.
“Girl Digital Leader” is a comprehensive digital literacy program specifically targeting young and midcareer level women in order to bridge the vast technological gender gap and igniting their potential by providing them a home based earning source. TECH Pakistan is an organization that promotes technology advocacy, inclusivity and adaptation within the industries of Pakistan. Following our mission we realize that we can’t achieve all this without the support of the 50% of population i.e. female. The participation of women in technological revolution is integral to explore greatest opportunities and new possibilities to strengthen the industry as whole. We are mending a persistent gender gap in digital spaces for which TECH Pakistan is taking a deliberate actions to cope this staggering situation. The project is backed by a dedicated platform called Blogspay; a social enterprise to provide home-based jobs with freedom of working and putting little effort to earn in a proper way.
