Smokeless stoves seems like a blessing for the people in rural areas. No doubt the use of technology to reduce health hazards is remarkable. This innovative device is manufactured to get rid of the indoor air pollution that occurs due to smoke produced by stoves.
In the usual old stove which uses biofuels, wood residues and animal dung , they all are the major sources of indoor air pollution when burnt for cooking, for providing heat and lighting up homes. With the use of these things many health issues were arising in the area like asthama, eye infection and many other such health problems. The stove takes or the less time for cooking as compared to the traditional ones, another major problem is that the food which was prepared by floor-mounted stoves is easily contaminated leading to diarrhoea, especially in children.
The smoke emitted from the old stove which uses wood is really hazardous as by burning wood the fine particulate emit carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide and various irritant gases such as nitrogen oxides that can scar the lungs. Wood smoke also contains chemicals known or suspected to be carcinogens, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and dioxin.
A smokeless stove is a great invention as it doesn’t carry indoor air pollution. The smokeless stove has high fuel efficiency, low cost, durable, aligned with current habits, having mobility, and easy to at home for cooking.
Each stove uses about 15 kilograms of soil mixed with rice husk, wheat straw and donkey excreta.Apart from soil wooden templates are also used in making a smokeless stove.
Now different organizations are working on installing more and more of these stoves to improve the quality of life in the rural areas and for that they are also empowering women and changing their lives by teaching them to build a hygienic, sustainable, smokeless earthen stove, which not only improves their health but also empowers them to earn a living by marketing and building stoves in their villages with the help of these smokeless stoves many people in pakistan have access to improved housing, health and better food.
This is one if the remarkable project which is changing the kitchen from a dirty place to a clean place providing the environmental sustainability as well as improved air quality within the household.
There is still a process or a well versed awareness program is required to educate people in the village about the harm caused by the smoke and made aware of all the toxins they are breathing, only then will they realize the importance of using a smokeless stove properly.
