An accountability court has sent Dr Mujahid Kamran, former vice-chancellor (VC) Punjab University (PU) and other suspects to prison on 14-days judicial remand in case of irregularities and illegal appointments in the university.
The Lahore office of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) filed the application in which it informed the court that it had completed its investigation and requested the court grant a 14-day judicial remand of the suspects. The suspects include Dr Kamran, Prof Dr Raas Masood, Prof Dr Liaqat Ali, Prof Dr Aurangzaib Alamgir and Prof Dr Kamran Abid.
NAB chairman had issued arrest warrants for the suspects on Oct 3 after which they were arrested on Oct 11.
Kamran Mujahid allegedly involved in unlawful hirings
Kamran and other suspects had allegedly involved in making as many as 550 illegal appointments at the Punjab University between the years 2013 and 2016. According to sources, all the illegal appointments were made in grade 17 and above. Kamran granted the approval of various hirings across the university in the violation of laws. Additionally, ex VC is also accused of being involved for the unlawful appointment of his wife Shazia Qureshi as the principal of Punjab University Law College.
Other accused in the case are Dr Liaquat, Dr Aurangzaib, Dr Raas Masood, Dr Kamran Zahid and Ameen Athar.
