The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has directed the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) not to block unregistered mobile phones after October 20.
The Senate Committee announced its reservations today saying that the public was not properly made aware of the mobile phones verification process. Earlier, it was reported that PTA has started sending SMS to all mobile subscribers to generate public awareness about Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS). The process has been started to stop illegal and smuggled mobile phones.
Moreover, it was in the news that PTA will block your IMEI number if the user has not registered their phones with PTA. Adding to your knowledge, you cannot use blocked phones to make or receive calls.
Check your Mobile Phone is registered or not
In order to get yourself registered, the user has to send their IMEI number via SMS to 8484. You can check your IMEI number by dialing *#06#. In response, the PTA will send a reply confirming whether your phone is compliant or not.
The move comes as the government wants to stop the smuggling of mobile phones. The smuggled phones are evaded of taxes by using one IMEI number for multiple mobile phones.
“Smuggled phones will stop working in Pakistan by the end of 2018. The IMEI will be blocked,” said Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry at a press conference on Thursday.
