Today, President Dr Arif Alvi on addressing a two-day international symposium on ‘Creating a Water Secure Pakistan’ asked the nation to play a key role in conserving water resources.
He further said the construction of new water resources will be the top priority of the government. He urged the people to play their role in the implementation of the national water policy. Nature has blessed Pakistan with plentiful natural resources including water. With the passage of time due to urbanization and increase in population has put a strong pressure on existing water resources, he added. We need to implement the national water policy to conserve water resources.
He also gave the example that the residents of Cholistan are bearing with the magnitude of this issue. The people in Tharparkar are dying of water scarcity. There is a lack of adequate measures to meet the growing needs of people there, he added. Pakistan has a vast potential of hydel power generation and according to NEPRA Pakistan could generate 40,000MW of power.
Clean and Green Pakistan
He said the government is aware of water conservation needs and is taking measures to create a green environment. The president said the launch of ‘Clean and Green Pakistan’ campaign is a right step in this direction as well as the ten billion trees tsunami plantation program will help save water resources in the country.
President Alvi lauded the initiative of Chief Justice of Pakistan for raising the issue of water shortage and starting a fundraising program for this purpose. He said 6.4 billion rupees have been gathered so far. Both people from Pakistan and overseas Pakistanis showed the enthusiastic response for this national cause.
