A Pakistani couple was arrested at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), Sri Lanka for smuggling‘heroin capsules’ hiding in their stomach.
The couple was caught when the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) of the country detected the smuggling attempt during the security screening process at the airport.
According to ColomboPage, the 67-year-old woman and 44-year-old man reportedly travelled from Lahore to Dubai and then get to Colombo in an effort to avoid the heavy security checks at the Colombo airport on passengers.
Police Spokesperson Superintendent of Police, Ruwan Gunasekara, said the PNB officers when the couple was inspected at the arrival lounge, it was found that they had swallowed heroin capsules. The man and the woman were taken into the custody and admitted to the Negombo Base hospital where necessary actions were taken to recover the heroin capsules from their stomach.
35 heroin capsules recovered from the woman
The police reported that so far 35 heroin capsules weighing 350 grams have been recovered from the woman stomach. However, the man also has admitted to swallowing the heroin capsules but nothing has been recovered yet.The police say the recovered heroin was estimated to be worth Rs. 4.2 million.
It has also been found that this was not the first time that woman visited the Sirilanka. She had come to Sri Lanka on six previous occasions but the male visited for the first time.
