“The use of plastic.” Every one is aware of the mass damage that plastic contamination causes on gross level. The plastic use has been discouraged on various platforms up till now. Apart from that too many awareness campaign have been done just to eradicate the use of plastic.
PRESIDENT UN ASSEMBLY SPOKE ABOUT AN INITIATIVE TO DISCOURAGE PLASTIC USE
According to stats approx half of 300 million tons plastic that go in waste in just once used. It doesn’t end here ,we are all just surrounded by plastic from waking up in morning till sleep. When you go to the bathroom from your sanitary products, the food you use, your gadgets, appliances everything hold it connection to plastic.
It is well said that “Old habits die hard”. But still we can start from taking small steps all the ways to create a greater impact.
According to UN an estimated 8 million tons of plastic contaminate the ocean every year. While Pakistan has also been placed among the countries creating massive plastic contamination in the environment.
UN General Assembly President Maria Fernanda on Wednesday at a Conference, she said
“I intend to leverage the capacity of the office of the President of the General Assembly, to support ongoing global campaigns to beat plastic pollution. This will include complementary efforts by UNEnvironment, Global Citizen and National Geographic, amongst others.”� “It is estimated that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the sea. Microplastics are now confirmed in table salt, in fresh water, each person on the planet is believed to have plastic in their bodies,”
There are several statements that we usually see in news regarding the ban on plastic. The countries that have imposed ban on plastic are Bangladesh, China, Taiwan, Kenya and Morocco but still the most important thing is what public do. While our neighbor India has also spoken about plastic ban. In a statement head of UN Environment said;
Plastic isn’t the problem. It’s what we do with it, says Erik Solheim, head of UN Environment. And that means the onus is on us to be far smarter in how we use this miracle material.
On Thai Environment Day, the Environment Minister General Surasak Karnjanarat also highlighted the damage regarding the plastic use. They have shown some real strategies by banning the delivery of plastic in public hospitals. During the course of past few years, UNEP has been working to purge the global plastic use.
An Indian actress Dia MIrza, the United Nations Environment Good Will Ambassador is also active against the plastic use. In one of her tweet she said;
Say No to single use plastics! Refuse the plastic bag, straw, bottle. Because you can
Country like Antigua and Barbuda has banned the single plastic use. A report featured on Business Insider says that;
The oceans will contain at least 937 million tons of plastic.
If we started to reduce plastic use by taking minimum precautions that may generate a powerful impact. One can stop single use plastic as much as he can, plastic bottles, straws because this contamination is majorly affecting sea shores, marine life and ocean health.
Govt. of Pakistan is also planning some reforms to curb plastic usage. CM Murad Chaudhry has said
No person shall import, manufacture, stockpile, trade, supply, distribute or sell any scheduled plastic product which is non-degradable, The scheduled plastic products must be oxo-biodegradable and the pro-degradant used must be approved by the agency.
In the end what we do really matters. If we practice a lifestyle with minimal plastic, it has the power to create a change!
