The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) has issued a notification to ban the use of naswar (tobacco snuff ) and cigarettes in the educational institutes across the province. The secretary Education of KP issued a directive to take strict measures and make necessary arrangements in this regard across all the educational institutes of KP. As per the notification, the ban will go into effect immediately and after that, the management of all the colleges and universities will be required to regularly monitor and strictly check all the canteens, cafes and tuck shops in their premises.
Furthermore, vigilance teams will be deployed from the department who will make surprise visits to educational institutes to ensure the ban is effective.
“Packets of sugary drinks and other eatables will also be strictly checked. Plus, counseling sessions will be held for the students in this regard to make them realize about the hazards of Naswar and cigarettes,” the notification reads.
Cigarettes, naswar, and use of other drugs including marijuana, opium, and ice are prevalent in the educational institutions across the country and a large number of students are deteriorating their health from using these drugs. On the other hand, the government has failed to curb the use of narcotics in colleges and universities. But hopefully, the ban will be a step forward to eliminate the use of drugs in educational institutes of KP.
