It is prescribed to diabetic patient preferably type 2 diabetes (non insulin dependent diabetes). It is an autoimmune disorder too where patient experiences hyper-glycemic condition and body can not prepare or effectively use insulin that ultimately causes insulin resistance.
It is also sometimes given to PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) patients . Sometimes in people going through weight loss cycle to balance their body glucose in between that weight losing phase. It suppresses the appetite.

As Metformin is highly recommended to be taken with food as much as possible to minimize its side effects.
