Six Pakistani banks have temporarily disabled international transactions through debit cards to prevent any scam and data breach. However, customers can use their cards for local transactions.
On Friday, the banks informed their customers via SMS messages saying “As a security precaution your debit card has been temporarily disabled only for international ATM cash withdrawal.”
Last week, the Bank Islami experienced one of the biggest cyber attacks in the history of Pakistan when a group of hackers breached the data of Bank Islami customers and stole an amount of $6 million from their accounts. Following the incident, the State Bank of Pakistan issued some instructions for the banks in Pakistan.

According to the State Bank of Pakistan, the use of debit cards had been suspended for overseas transactions after the cyber attack on Bank Islami. the central bank had said in a statement. “As a result of a security breach of payment cards of one of the banks in Pakistan yesterday and their unauthorized use on different delivery channels i.e. at ATMs and POS in different countries, the bank has temporarily restricted usage of its cards for overseas transactions.”
The SBP had also issued a notification to all Pakistani banks to ensure complete security of payment cards and to monitor their usage activity using guards and cameras especially overseas transactions, on a real-time basis.
